STEWARD AND MOBILIZER MEETING
"Mark Your Calendars"
At the March membership meeting held on Tuesday, March 17th,
there was plenty of focus and conversation on how we planned to move
forward immediately as a Local.
It was deemed that an extremely important priority presently
facing us is the passage of the Employee Free Choice Act which was
introduced last week. There is a need to step up our activities
involving this legislation to a point where everyone will realize
why there is a need for passage.
Mark your calendars for April 14, 2009 and make it a plan to
attend this meeting which will be held here at our Local hall on 920
11th Street SE, Washington, DC. This meeting is open to
the entire membership.
PLEASE CALL US AT 202 291-1500 NO LATER THAN FRIDAY,APRIL 10,
2009 IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND!
WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH
"Celebration "
The Maryland State & District of Columbia AFL-CIO in cooperation
with the IBEW Local 26 and the Coalition of Labor Union Women—DC
Metro Chapter are proud to sponsor a celebration of Women’s History
Month on Tuesday, March 31, 2009.
The
celebration will be held at the IBEW Local 26 hall at 4371
Parliament Place, Lanham, Maryland from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards from the 4th Congressional
District in Maryland will be the guest speaker. A panel discussion
concerning women’s health care, pay equity and domestic violence
will precede the Congresswoman’s remarks.
Refreshments will be served.
"EMPLOYEE FREE CHOICE ACT—Important to Women"
A recent study by the Center for Economic and Policy Research
found that union representation substantially improves the pay and
benefits that women receive. On average, unionization raised
women's wages by 11.2 percent -- about $2.00 per hour --
compared to non-union women with similar characteristics. Among
women workers, those in unions were about 19 percentage points more
likely to have employer-provided health insurance and about 25
percentage points more likely to be in an employer-provided pension.
.
With the most pro-worker Congress in years, and President Obama
committed to the cause, this is our best chance yet to pass this
bill. But it's anything but a done deal.
Please call your senators and representative today, urging them to
support the Employee Free Choice Act. Phone the U.S. Capitol
Switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask to be connected to your
state's members of Congress.
